Club Racing

The ordinary midweek club nights — two qualifiers and mains, no championship attached. Nobody is chasing a title, so what is worth keeping is the driving: who turned the quickest lap, who qualified where, and who put a run together when it counted.

A 21-lap second qualifier made Noah Hicklin the TQ, and then he found a 22nd lap in the main, the one Joe Duffy couldn't. His 13.316 was the quickest lap of the night and his 92.93% the steadiest run of his evening. Three weeks after his 13.231 of 12 August, he's living in the low 13s, and for the second time in that stretch he's won this class by a lap.

The main was Joe Duffy's best run of the night: 21 laps, more than either qualifier, and a 13.934 best that beat both of them. It still left him a lap down on Noah Hicklin, and the 87.41% was the scrappiest of his three runs. Three weeks earlier, on the 12 August night, Hicklin beat him by three laps. It's one now, and I'll call that progress.

The night in short

Noah Hicklin TQ'd, turned the quickest lap of the night at 13.316 and ran 22 laps in the main to Joe Duffy's 21. Duffy's best run came in the A, 21 laps with a 13.934 best, and it still left him a lap short. Hicklin's 92.93% was the steadiest run either driver put together all night. Three weeks earlier Hicklin had beaten him by three laps, and on this night it was one, which is real ground made up even with Hicklin winning again.

One fast lap here is not the one the timing printed. A transponder counted a lap twice, producing a time quicker than the class has ever gone from a run nowhere near that pace, so the figure shown is that driver’s quickest genuine lap of the run instead. Nothing else about it moves: the finish, the laps and time and the average are as they were raced.

Two 20-lap qualifiers at 90.42% and 89.28%, a 13.794 in the second of them, and then a main that went the wrong way. Joe Duffy managed 18 laps at 68.31% with a 17.560 average, his scrappiest run of the night by a distance. The timing also credited him with a 12.189 in that main, which was one lap counted twice and not a lap he drove. His real best in it was 13.806. A week after a 21-lap main at 90.26%, this is a step back.

The night in short

Joe Duffy had Mod 2wd to himself again, sharing the track with the 13.5 Stadium Truck field, so there's no win to credit. His qualifying was solid, 20 laps in both runs, with a 13.794 in the second that stood as the quickest lap of the night in the class. The main was a different story: 18 laps at 68.31%, a long way short of the 21 laps at 90.26% he ran a week earlier. The timing handed him a 12.189 in that main, but it was one lap counted twice, and 13.806 is the best lap he actually drove in it.

Joe Duffy had the Mod 2wd class to himself, so there's no win to credit, but there's plenty to like. His main went 21 laps at 90.26% with a 13.671, quicker than any lap he'd turned on his two earlier nights in this class. A week after a 19-lap main at 69.84%, that's the run he needed. The second qualifier slid to 15 laps at 27.02%, and he answered it in the A.

The night in short

A one-car night for Mod 2wd, with Joe Duffy running inside the 13.5 Expert 4wd Buggy session, raced together and scored apart. With nobody to beat there's no win to credit, so the only measure is Duffy against Duffy, and on that measure it was a good evening. His main went 21 laps at 90.26% with a 13.671 best, quicker than his best from 15 July or 12 August. The second qualifier was the blot, 15 laps at 27.02%. Seven days after a 69.84% main, I'll take this rebound.

Noah Hicklin's first qualifier stopped at 8 laps and 2:58.994, and everything after it was a demolition. A 21-lap second run at 93.79% took the TQ, then he checked out in the main, 22 laps and a lap clear of the field, with a 13.231 heater more than four tenths quicker than any lap this class had turned on its earlier nights. That's magnificent, and the 8-lap opener is the only thing on his night I'd change.

A 6-lap first qualifier at -48.46% consistency is about as rough as a five-minute run gets, and Jake Stoeltzing still finished second. He fixed it in the second qualifier, 20 laps at 91.78%, then ran the steadiest main in the A at 92.19%. His 14.379 was the slowest best lap of the four, and it made no difference: 21 laps put him a lap clear of William Schroeder and two clear of Joe Duffy. From the third seed, I'll call that a fine recovery.

William Schroeder was the last car on the grid and finished on the podium, beating the second seed by a lap to do it. His opening qualifier, 20 laps at 92.47%, did all the seeding work, because the second stopped at 14 laps and 3:53.857. The main was 20 laps at 87.35% with a 14.266 best, and with Joe Duffy stuck on 19 laps at 69.84%, that was enough. A fourth seed on the podium is an upset, and he got there by banking the laps.

    A-main P4 · qualified P2 · qual best lap 13.909 · 91.60% qual cons · 19 laps · fast 14.004 · 69.84% cons

One number explains this main: 69.84%. Joe Duffy went in as the second seed off a 20-lap qualifier at 91.60%, had the pace with a 14.004 that only Noah Hicklin went quicker than, and averaged 16.629, more than two and a half seconds off it. That consistency says something went wrong out there, and 19 laps left him last of four. His first qualifier was scrappy too, 11 laps at 25.45%, so this was one good run out of three, and from the second seed that's a collapse.

The night in short

Noah Hicklin TQ'd, won by a lap and threw down a 13.231 in the main, more than four tenths quicker than any lap this class had turned on its earlier nights, all after a first qualifier that stopped at 8 laps. Behind him the grid turned upside down. Jake Stoeltzing came from the third seed to second with the slowest best lap in the A and its steadiest run, 92.19%, and William Schroeder took third from the back of the grid. Joe Duffy went the other way, second on the grid and last at the flag after a 69.84% main. Four cars, and only the winner finished where he started.

He still finished 2.656 seconds behind on the same 21 laps, which is about as maddening as second place gets. Qualifying is where Gibson got ahead of him, 21 laps in both runs to Hicklin's two 20s, and the main didn't reverse it. The 86.85% was the scrappiest run in the A, and I'd hold that against him most nights. Four days after a five-lap win, a lap down on the top two from fourth on the grid is still the right result.

    A-main P4 · qualified P3 · qual best lap 14.296 · 91.78% qual cons · 20 laps · fast 14.218 · 90.56% cons

Joe Duffy's first qualifier ended after three laps and 49.848 seconds, so the second had to carry him, and it did: 20 laps at 91.78% for third on the grid. The main was tidy as well at 90.56%, but his 14.218 best was the slowest in the A, and Jake Stoeltzing, seeded behind him, finished a little under four seconds ahead. He was clean enough. In a field where the other three all had a lap in the 13s, that left him fourth.

The night in short

Nick Gibson reversed the 27 June result: TQ with the quickest lap of the night, a 13.645, and a win over Noah Hicklin by 2.656 seconds on the same 21 laps. Hicklin is the hard-luck story, with the steadiest run in the A at 95.03% and a slightly quicker average than the winner, and still second. Behind them Jake Stoeltzing turned the fourth seed into third place with a 13.923 that Joe Duffy couldn't match, even if 86.85% made it a scrappy run. Duffy's first qualifier stopped at three laps, his second rescued the evening with 20 laps, and the main left him fourth, a little under four seconds behind Stoeltzing.

Qualifying like a metronome, 21 laps both times at 94.02% and 95.60%, and then a main that came back at 89.71%: that drop is Jake Stoeltzing's second place. He had the quickest lap of the race, a 13.695, and still needed 5:12.211 for his 21 laps, nearly eleven seconds longer than the 5:01.392 he ran in his second qualifier. Twenty-two laps in both qualifiers when nobody else found more than 21, and a 97.44% second run averaging 13.978: Noah Hicklin owned qualifying and took the TQ. Something went wrong in the main, because it stopped at 11 laps and 2:49.341, and the top seed finished third of three. The 13.751 he turned before it ended was quicker than Joe Duffy's best in the race, so the speed was still there. That's a brutal way to waste the best qualifying in the class.

The night in short

Noah Hicklin owned qualifying with 22 laps in both runs and a 97.44% second run, then his main stopped at 11 laps and 2:49.341, and the TQ finished third. That left the A to the other two, and Joe Duffy took it from the third seed by 3.095 seconds over Jake Stoeltzing, both on 21 laps. Duffy got tidier when it counted, 92.66% in the main after nothing better than 90.07% in qualifying, and he'd turned the quickest lap of the night along the way, a 13.517. Stoeltzing went the other way, from 95.60% in qualifying to 89.71% in the main, and the quickest lap of the race at 13.695 couldn't rescue it.

His last two nights in this class, in June and July, both stopped after the first qualifier. This time his whole qualifying was a single run, the second, and it was the best anybody produced: 19 laps in 5:07.154 at 92.26%, the TQ by a full lap. Then he finished what he started. The A was 18 laps in 5:00.765 with a 14.598 heater in it, the quickest lap of the night, and Dallas Boyd was 10.280 seconds back on the same lap. His 82.57% was the scrappiest main of the six and he won by ten seconds anyway. That is pace to burn.

His third second place since mid-August was the first on the winner's lap. The A was the steadiest main of the six at 88.85%, his 16.682 average sat about a tenth of a second a lap off William Schroeder's, and his 14.983 made him one of two drivers under 15 seconds all night. He still lost by 10.280 seconds. This close on average, what he lacks is a hot lap of his own, and the winner had one at 14.598.

Same script as three weeks earlier: seeded fourth, finished third, and Mark Beach the man behind him both times. The qualifying was a mixed bag, a tidy 90.63% opener and then a 70.86% second run, the roughest of anybody's, with his quickest qualifying lap of 15.964 buried in it. The main brought the tidy version back, 16 laps at 88.23%. Two podiums from fourth on the grid in three weeks, and I'm starting to think the grid undersells him.

Every other car in the A ran past five minutes. His main stopped at 15 laps and 4:34.605, so something went wrong out there before the flag. Until then it was going well: 87.42%, and a 15.396 that only the top two beat in the race, quicker than anything he turned in qualifying. Fourteen laps in the main, after 12 in each of his last two, and a month after finishing last he had a car behind him. I'll call that progress. The pace is still the worry: an 18.520 best lap, the slowest of the six, and two laps behind the podium. Russell Rima's best lap was two seconds quicker and he still finished 2.112 seconds back on the same lap, and Albert Bredernitz had the better average, 22.408 to 22.521.

Two qualifiers, three laps each, and the back of the grid was the only place left for him. The A-main was his first full run of the night, 14 laps at 83.91%, and the 16.436 in it was his best lap in this class on club nights this summer, two seconds quicker than Albert Bredernitz's best. Albert Bredernitz still finished 2.112 seconds ahead on the same lap. After two three-lap runs, I'd call that a decent salvage.

The night in short

William Schroeder's last two mains in this class, in June and July, produced no laps at all, and he came back with a single qualifying run that was the best anybody produced: 19 laps at 92.26% and the TQ by a full lap. The A was scrappier at 82.57%, and it hardly mattered with the class's quickest lap of the night in it at 14.598. Dallas Boyd took second for the third time since mid-August, and for the first time on the winner's lap, 10.280 seconds back with the steadiest main of the six. Jack Foster repeated his trick from three weeks earlier, fourth on the grid and third at the flag, and again it was Mark Beach behind him, this time because Mark Beach's main stopped at 15 laps and 4:34.605, the only one that did not reach five minutes. At the back, Russell Rima got three laps out of each qualifier and then ran a full main, and Albert Bredernitz beat him by 2.112 seconds with a best lap two seconds slower.

Twenty-two thousandths of a second: that is how much quicker Mathew Schroeder's best lap in the A was, 14.704 to 14.726, and that makes this win his fourth Wednesday in a row and the first of the four where somebody else had the fastest lap of the main. Nothing else mattered. He TQ'd off the opener, 19 laps in 5:02.970 with the night's quickest lap in it at 14.672, and the A was the only 19-lap run in the race, at a 15.889 average more than a second a lap quicker than anyone behind him. The odd part is the average, 17.124 against Mathew Schroeder's 17.120, as near level as two averages get over 18 laps, and second still went the other way by 5.074 seconds. Qualifying went the right way, 15 laps and then 17, and the main produced his best lap of the evening at 16.197. The rest of the main was the problem: 80.73%, the scrappiest of the four, and 16 laps after 17 in the second qualifier. The night in short

For the first time in this run of Wednesday wins, Hendrick Westmoreland did not have the quickest lap of the main, and it made no difference at all. Mathew Schroeder beat his second qualifier on the same 19 laps and turned a 14.704 in the A, but Hendrick Westmoreland's TQ was already banked from the opener, with the class's quickest lap of the night in it at 14.672, and his main was the only 19-lap run in the race. The strangest finish was behind him: Mathew Schroeder and Mark Beach averaged 17.120 and 17.124 over 18 laps each and still crossed the line 5.074 seconds apart. Mark Beach had the steadiest run of the night in both qualifying and the main, Mathew Schroeder had the speed, and the speed got second. Brian Zimmerman was fourth of four on 16 laps, his quickest lap of the evening coming in the A alongside the lowest consistency in it at 80.73%.

Dallas Boyd held 91.46% to Hendrick Westmoreland's 91.15%, and the winner's 15.786 average was still three quarters of a second a lap quicker than anyone else in the race. The alarming thing about Hendrick Westmoreland's second straight Wednesday win is that it was the scruffier of the two: a TQ off 19 laps with the class's quickest lap of the night at 14.621, then an A-main at 87.05% that still left the next car two laps behind. The racing was behind him, where Dallas Boyd, Mark Beach and C4 all finished on 17 laps and inside 3.743 seconds of each other. Dallas Boyd held second despite the roughest main of the three at 81.66%, and C4 got into that group from fifth on the grid after a first qualifier with no laps in it. Brian Zimmerman was the driver C4 came out ahead of, and the oddest story of the night: the steadiest in the class in both qualifying and the main, and two laps short of the group in fifth. Albert Bredernitz turned a nine-lap opening qualifier into a 12-lap main at 76.17%, which counts as a recovery from where he started.

The hot lap of the night was his, a 14.424 in the second qualifier, and it came in a scrappy 83.38% run. Fast and ragged, and the TQ had already come out of the opener. Then the A-main went green and the ragged part vanished: 20 laps in 5:01.139 at 93.36%, with the best average in the race at 15.621. How does a driver beat a car on the same lap by 17.955 seconds? He ran his main eight points steadier than his best qualifier. Vaughn Vance turned 20 laps of his own and was nowhere near him.

Nobody in the class qualified steadier than his 92.17% second run, and the A-main kept that shape: 20 laps at 91.78%, with Mathew Schroeder, who started ahead of him, a lap behind at the flag. Back in June his main ran to 17 laps. Three more in seven weeks is a serious jump, and the only thing keeping him out of the headline is Hendrick Westmoreland doing the same 20 laps 17.955 seconds sooner.

I want to know where the qualifying car went. His 14.792 in the second run was a lap only Hendrick Westmoreland beat all night, and it seeded him second. In the A his best was 15.277, nearly half a second slower, and a 17.047 average left him a full lap behind the top two. Third is a fine Wednesday for most of this field. With his single-lap speed, it is a place too low.

Charlie Kleinhagen ran 18 laps in 5:00.687 here, four seconds quicker than the 18 that made him runner-up in July, and it was worth fourth. That one comparison tells the story of this field. C4 did his part, 91.20% in the main and a 15.308 that beat both of his qualifying bests, with Mark Beach 6.500 seconds behind on the same lap. Three cars simply went further, and two of them went 20 laps.

Four weeks ago he won this class on 19 laps. This field moved the bar: his 18 laps at 90.72% would have made the podium on any of the June or July nights, and here they were worth fifth. The bright side is a main a lap longer than either qualifier, with the quickest lap of his evening in it at 15.807. Fifth on the grid and fifth at the flag, and in this company that is par.

Seven weeks ago his best lap in the A was a 17.303. This time it was a 15.831, nearly a second and a half quicker, and none of his three runs dropped below 89.64%. The result is last of six, and I'm not losing sleep over it: his 17 laps were one more than his June main, and every car in front of him ran 18 or more.

The night in short

Hendrick Westmoreland qualified untidily and raced like a metronome, and nobody had an answer for the second half of that. The class's quickest lap of the night, a 14.424, sat in a second qualifier of just 83.38%, and then his A-main ran 20 laps in 5:01.139 at 93.36%, the best average and consistency in the race. Vaughn Vance was the only driver to match that lap count, off the steadiest qualifying run in the class at 92.17%, and still finished 17.955 seconds back. Mathew Schroeder had the second quickest lap of the night at 14.792 and finished a lap behind both of them in third, which is the result I'd send back. Nobody below him moved off his grid slot, and that says more about the pace than about them: Mark Beach was fifth on 18 laps, one fewer than he won with four weeks earlier.

Three weeks ago Mark Beach was eighth on the grid after a six-lap second qualifier. Tonight he TQ'd and won by a lap, and he did it without the quickest lap in qualifying or in the main. What he had was consistency nobody else came near: none of his three runs dropped below 93.90%, and no other driver in the class reached that figure once. C4 beat him over a single lap in the race and finished a lap down. That's a magnificent night's work.

Charlie Kleinhagen went from third seed to second, 6.470 seconds clear of Matt Leibman with the same 18 laps, and the only car ahead of him was a lap up the road. The 24 June B-main stopped at eight laps for Russell Rima, and this time he ran the full five minutes and came away fourth from the fifth seed. The lap I like is the 16.569 in the main, almost a second quicker than his 17.506 best in qualifying. The count didn't move with it, though: 15 laps in all three runs, which left him four laps down on the winner.

Something went wrong in Albert Bredernitz's main, and the 25.46% consistency says so. His average sat more than eight seconds off his best lap, and a driver who did 14 laps in both qualifiers finished with 12. William Schroeder turned the quickest lap in the class all night, a 15.237 in the first qualifier, on an 18-lap run that seeded him second. That was his last run of the night with a lap in it. No laps in the second qualifier, none in the main, sixth of six. And I've seen this before: eighteen days ago he ran a 17-lap first qualifier and then nothing in Q2 or the main. Two nights, the same shape, and both times the speed in that first run was real. I want to see that 15.237 last a whole main.

The night in short

Mark Beach TQ'd and won by a lap without owning the quickest lap of qualifying or of the main, and consistency is how: three runs between 93.90% and 94.82%, when the best anybody else managed all night was C4's 93.02% in qualifying. C4 took the main's quickest lap at 15.543 and Matt Leibman ran his best race of the night to put the fourth seed on the podium, both finishing on 18 laps. The class's quickest lap all night, a 15.237, belonged to William Schroeder, who then turned no laps in the second qualifier and none in the main, the exact shape of his 27 June night. Twice now he has earned the second grid slot and come away from the main without a lap, and that is far too much good qualifying to leave on the table. Albert Bredernitz's 25.46% main was the other rough one.

Seventeen laps in each qualifier and 17 again in the main carried Zac Mathews a place above his sixth seed and onto the same lap count as the third-placed car. His best in the main, 16.695, was slower than either qualifier, so he bought the result with laps instead of speed, and it worked. He was 1.479 seconds off fourth at the flag, and nobody in the A finished closer to the car ahead.

Brian Zimmerman raced twice to get sixth, and I respect every lap of it. Two 16-lap qualifiers left him ninth on the grid and in the B, where he ran his tidiest race of the night, 17 laps at 92.30%, and took the second bump spot. Back out in the A he finished 5.072 seconds ahead of Jagger Vance, a direct qualifier, with the same 16 laps. Three places up from his seed is the biggest climb in the class tonight.

A direct ticket to the A as the fifth seed, and Jagger Vance came home seventh, behind Brian Zimmerman, who had already raced the B to get there. How does that happen? His best lap in the main was 17.303, the slowest best lap in the A-main and almost nine-tenths off the 16.411 he turned in qualifying, and his average climbed from 17.759 in his seeding run to 19.367. Mark Beach finished 1.770 seconds behind him, so even seventh needed holding. A main that far off his own qualifying is hard to defend.

Mark Beach's second qualifier stopped at six laps and 1:49.081, and with only a 16-lap first run to stand on he seeded eighth and went to the B. He won it by a full lap, 18 laps at 93.62%, the cleanest main run in the class all night and a lap more than anyone outside the top two managed in the A. Then the A-main gave him his best lap of the night, a 15.627 that only Shane Alberico and Mathew Schroeder beat in that race, and a 19.129 average across 16 laps that left him last of eight. I love the B. The A was a mess.

Top seed in the B, the fifth-quickest best lap in qualifying, and Henry Ballew missed the bump by a place. The pace was there in the race too: his 15.783 was second only to Mark Beach in the B and more than a second quicker than anything Brian Zimmerman turned in it. Zimmerman finished a lap ahead of him regardless, because Ballew's B ran at 77.41%, the lowest consistency of any main run in the class. He had the speed and not the laps, and a top seed in a lower main has to transfer.

The B-main is where Sam Bredernitz found his speed: a 16.649, six-tenths quicker than anything he turned in qualifying. The lap count didn't move with it. He ran 16 in both qualifiers and 16 in the B, finishing 8.747 seconds behind Henry Ballew and right where he seeded. Quicker laps and the same count tell me the next step is stringing more of them together.

Albert Bredernitz's first qualifier stopped at five laps, and his 14-lap second run was the shortest seeding run in the field, which made him the last seed of twelve. It got better from there: 15 laps in the B with an 18.122, his quickest lap of the night, and a finish one place above his seed. He was still a lap behind Sam Bredernitz, and 18.122 is a long way off Mark Beach's 15.697 in the same race.

Fifteen laps in his second qualifier showed Russell Rima had five minutes of racing in him. The B-main stopped at eight laps and 3:06.756, which says something went wrong out there, and it dropped him below Albert Bredernitz, the only driver seeded behind him. Even before it ended his best lap was 19.763, more than two seconds off the 17.501 he ran in qualifying.

The night in short

Shane Alberico TQ'd, won and ran the lowest average in the A-main, and only Mathew Schroeder, owner of the class's quickest lap all night at 14.635, finished on his lap. Everyone else in the A finished at least two laps down on the winner, so the racing worth arguing about came out of the B. Mark Beach won it by a lap at 93.62%, the cleanest main run in the class, and Brian Zimmerman took the second bump while Henry Ballew, top seed in the B, sank to 77.41% and stayed put. Zimmerman then beat Jagger Vance, a direct qualifier, on his way from ninth seed to sixth. Beach turned a 15.627 in the A, the third-quickest lap of that race, and still came home last of eight, which is the strangest result of the night.

The main was his best run of the evening by a distance: 19 laps, a 14.848 that took better than half a second off his qualifying best, and a 16.575 average that C4 couldn't match. That average decided it, worth 3.411 seconds at the flag against a car with the quicker lap. It's his first win in this class since the 15 July night, when he beat the same man on the same 19 laps, and I liked how he won it: slower over one lap, better over all 19.

TQ, the hot lap of the night at 14.607, and still beaten. How? Charlie Kleinhagen's 16.795 average in the main was 0.220 a lap slower than Mark Beach's, and one quick lap can't pay that back over 19 laps. His second qualifier, 12 laps at a 25.977 average, had already shown how far apart his best and worst laps could get. That's four second places from the five Wednesdays C4 has raced in this class since July, and with the top seed in hand this is the one that should sting.

The steadiest run of the night belonged to Ryan Johnson, 92.28% in his opening qualifier, and he ran the tidiest main as well at 88.82%. What's new is the speed. His 15.311 in the A was the quickest lap he's turned in this class on a club night, half a second clear of his qualifying best. Eighteen laps left him a lap down and exactly where he seeded, but that lap time is the thing I'd be taking home.

The night in short

The TQ with the quickest lap of the night went home second, and that's the whole story of a three-car Wednesday. C4 seeded first off an 18-lap opener and turned a 14.607 in the main, but Mark Beach's 16.575 average beat his 16.795, and over 19 laps that came to 3.411 seconds. It's the second time Mark Beach has beaten him on equal laps, after 0.599 of a second settled the 15 July night. Ryan Johnson was the tidiest driver in the class at both ends of the evening, 92.28% in his first qualifier and 88.82% in the main, with his best lap in this class since June thrown in. For C4 it's another second place, and the first of them that came from the top seed, which is a bitter way to collect one.

Four Wednesdays in this class, three wins, and Hendrick Westmoreland made this one look routine. Nineteen laps, then 20 for the TQ, then 21 in the main, with the best lap anybody turned all night (14.291) arriving as early as the first qualifier. His 15.199 race average was the only one in the A under 16 seconds, and it put him a lap clear of everybody. The one thing I can hold against him is that Mark Beach ran the steadier main, by nine hundredths of a point.

His 93.72% in the second qualifier was the cleanest run of the whole night, too. His average was 17.428, more than three seconds off his own best lap, against Hendrick Westmoreland's 15.199. That's a car with the speed that couldn't string the laps together. A week after a main that gave him no laps at all, though, 18 laps with a lap like that in it is a proper recovery, and the 14.311 was only 0.020 off the best anybody turned all night.

Something went wrong early, and it's the second Wednesday running: last week's A stopped after three laps. I feel for him, because a 14.764 in qualifying put him in the company of the front-runners, and twice now his main has ended before he could prove it.

The night in short

Hendrick Westmoreland took the TQ on 20 laps, won the main with 21 laps and owned the quickest lap of the night, a 14.291 from his first qualifier, for three wins in four Wednesdays in this class. Mark Beach was the tidiest man in the field and still a lap behind, steadier than the winner at 93.33% but with a best lap seven tenths slower. The most interesting car was Jake Hoffman's: nobody in the A beat his 14.311, yet a 17.428 average left him fourth and three laps down. Dallas Boyd had the rough one, second on the grid and out of the main after four laps, the second week in a row his A ended early. C4 turned fourth on the grid into third, and Brian Zimmerman found a lap more every time out to take fifth from the back of the grid.

The quickest lap of the night was Jake Hoffman's, a 14.212 in his second qualifier, and his 14.484 in the first was the only other qualifying lap under 14.5. Then the main credited him with no laps at all, and the man with the hot lap went down as seventh of seven. That's a cruel way to spend a Wednesday. A car that turns a 14.212 had far more to say than a blank in the main, and I'm sorry we didn't get to hear it.

The night in short

Hendrick Westmoreland bounced back from last week's defeat the simplest way there is, the TQ on 20 laps and then 21 in the main, a lap clear of everybody. The story came from the other end of the grid: C4 qualified seventh of seven after an opener at 54.20% and a seven-lap second run, then took second with 20 laps at 91.87%. Anthony Woodruff and Mark Beach each lost a place on their seeds, finishing on 19 laps with seven seconds between them, and Ryan Johnson ran his third straight 18-lap main for fifth. The rough end belonged to Dallas Boyd, three laps in the main, and to Jake Hoffman, whose main produced no laps at all. He owned the two quickest qualifying laps of the night, 14.212 and 14.484, and had nothing in the A to show for them, which is as harsh as this sport gets.

One qualifying run, the TQ, and a main nobody could live with. Noah Hicklin's 21 laps at 95.73% in Q2 were dialed, and the A was better again: 22 laps, the hot lap of the night at 13.793 and a 14.549 average. That average was quicker than the best single lap of three of the four drivers behind him. He finished two laps up the road from Hendrick Westmoreland, who'd won this class a week earlier on 22 laps, and Noah Hicklin's 22 came 3.816 seconds quicker than that winning run. Magnificent is the word.

Seven days after winning this class on 22 laps, Hendrick Westmoreland ran 20 and finished two laps behind, and I'm not putting much of that on him. Besides the winner he was the only driver under 15 seconds, with a 14.015 in the main, and his 89.34% there was a big step up on the 80.91% qualifier that seeded him second. He simply met a car averaging 14.549.

Sixteen laps is the most Brian Zimmerman has run in a main in this class on club nights this summer, up from 12 in June and 15 in July, so give him that. The rest of the night slid. Two qualifiers at 91.58% and 91.48% became 86.97% in the A, and a 20.438 average left him six laps behind Noah Hicklin. Odd detail of the week: those two qualifiers finished 0.010 of a second apart, 5:13.694 and 5:13.704, on different lap counts.

The night in short

Five 4wd buggies shared the track with the Mod 2wd Buggy field, were scored on their own, and finished in exactly the order they qualified. Noah Hicklin needed one qualifier for the TQ, 21 laps at 95.73%, and the main was better still: 22 laps and the quickest lap of the night at 13.793. Mark Beach found two more laps in the main than in either qualifier and Ryan Johnson improved every time he went out, though neither could move up a place. Brian Zimmerman had the roughest main at 86.97%, down from two qualifiers in the 91s. Hendrick Westmoreland was the only other driver under 15 seconds all night and still lost by two laps, which tells me Noah Hicklin wasn't racing this field so much as lapping it.

The heater of the night was his, a 14.058, and the only other lap under 14.1 was his as well, from his first qualifier. How does the third seed finish last? A 55.34% main, that's how. Vaughn Vance averaged 18.190 around a 15.062 best lap, and Ryan Johnson, who started two places behind him, finished 13.787 seconds ahead on the same 18 laps. That wastes real speed: his 14.621 in the first qualifier was the quickest lap anybody other than Hendrick Westmoreland turned all night, and a 19-lap Q2 at 90.98% had him third on the grid. From a driver who took second in June on 19 laps, this main was unacceptable.

The night in short

Hendrick Westmoreland owned this night: two 21-lap qualifiers for the TQ, then 22 laps at 95.63% in the main and the quickest lap of the night, a 14.058, for a win by two clear laps. C4 was best of the rest, turning a 14-lap first qualifier into the steadiest qualifying run in the class at 93.63% and then 20 laps in the main. Mark Beach and Ryan Johnson each finished a place better than they qualified, and both of those places came out of Vaughn Vance. He started third with a 14.621 in qualifying that only Hendrick Westmoreland beat, and finished fifth after a 55.34% main. Ryan Johnson started last and got better with every run, and on this night that was worth more than all of Vaughn Vance's speed.

The main came in at a 17.303 average, nearly eight-tenths a lap slower than that Q2, and Ryan Johnson came from three seeds back to beat him by 1.776 on the same lap. He was seeded third and finished fourth, and the run that would have kept him on the podium was one he'd already driven in qualifying.

Something went wrong for Brian Zimmerman, because his main stopped at 12 laps and 3:48.529. Shame, since Q1 had been decent: 18 laps at 91.22% and a 15.619 quicker than anything Mark Beach or Ryan Johnson turned in qualifying. Q2 recorded nothing, which leaves one full-length run in his whole night, and it was the first thing he did.

One lap, a 19.166, and that was Chris Gross's main. Qualifying had gone fine without being quick, 17 laps in Q2 with a 15.778 best, which was good for the last seed of seven. He's classified ahead of a car credited with no laps at all, and that is the thinnest of silver linings on a miserable Wednesday.

Only Alberico and Vance went quicker in qualifying than Dennis Keith's 14.899, turned on the way to 18 laps in Q2 and the fourth seed. Then the main credits him with no laps at all. That's a hard end to a night with real pace in it, because that 14.899 was quicker than any lap Ryan Johnson, who finished third, turned all evening.

The night in short

Shane Alberico won this by a lap from TQ, and the hot lap of the night, a 14.153, came in the main he won. Vaughn Vance was plainly the second-quickest car and finished second, 19 laps to Alberico's 20. Behind them the night came apart: Dennis Keith turned no laps in the main, Chris Gross managed one, and Brian Zimmerman stopped at 12 laps. Ryan Johnson was there to collect, sixth of seven on the grid and third at the flag on the cleanest main in the class, 92.47%. Mark Beach had the two tidiest qualifiers of the night and finished fourth, 1.776 behind Johnson on the same lap.

A fortnight after losing to the fifth seed, Mark Beach won this one by five laps and posted his best club-night numbers of the summer doing it. The 15.827 in the main topped the class for the night, 0.183 quicker than his 16.010 from 26 August, and the 16.759 average beat the 16.982 from his 19 August win, his previous best. His Q1, 17 laps at 96.56%, was the steadiest run of the night and his steadiest on a club night all summer. The two qualifiers finished 0.059 apart over 17 laps, and that kind of repeatability is frightening.

The A also gave him his steadiest run at 85.40% and a 19.678 best, the first time all night his quickest lap got under 20 seconds. Chuck Burns had the second seed and the quickest lap of Q1: his 17.134 beat Mark Beach's best in that run by 0.010. Then the night fell apart. Q2 came back at 8 laps on a 39.942 average, and the main was 10 laps at 34.181, more than 14 seconds a lap off the 20.074 that seeded him. Something went wrong out there, because a driver who ran an 18.530 main two weeks ago doesn't lose four laps to the third seed. Front row to the back of three.

The night in short

Mark Beach's answer to losing on 2 September was the best club night he has had in this class: a 96.56% Q1, the steadiest run of the night, then a main at a 16.759 average with a 15.827 in it that nobody else came near. Five laps clear of Mike Fleming is the biggest margin he has won by all summer. Fleming took second from the bottom seed on three runs whose averages sat within 0.158 of each other, and that kind of sameness collects places when somebody else's night goes wrong. Chuck Burns's went badly wrong: the second seed off a 15-lap Q1 with the quickest lap of that run, then 8 laps in Q2 and 10 in the A at a 34.181 average, two weeks after the best club-night main he had run in this class.

That beat Jake Hoffman, seeded a place ahead of him, by 6.345, and left him 1.390 short of Brian Zimmerman on the same 17 laps. Jake Hoffman had the speed for a podium and couldn't string the laps together. His 16.363 in Q2 was the second-best lap of qualifying, behind only Mark Beach, and his 16.698 in the main was quicker than anything Brian Zimmerman or Chuck Burns turned in there. Both of them beat him. An 18.973 average at 88.59%, the softest A of the night and more than a second a lap off his own Q2, took the third seed to fifth. That much speed finishing last is unacceptable.

Mathew Schroeder won from fifth on a five-car grid by beating his own best qualifier by 1.374 a lap: a 17.759 average at 94.63%, with the night's best lap, a 16.159, inside it. The TQ, Mark Beach, came in having won every Wednesday club night he'd raced in this class and ran the steadiest qualifier of the night at 95.52%, then produced a 17.926 main, his slowest club-night main all summer, and lost by 2.117 on the same 18 laps. Brian Zimmerman matched the winner's 94.63% for his tidiest main yet and finished 1.390 clear of Chuck Burns, whose 18.530 was his own best main average. Jake Hoffman had the second-best lap of qualifying and the scrappiest A of the night, and that is how a third seed finishes fifth.

Mark Beach took the TQ on the first run of the night, 18 laps in 5:13.683 at 94.10%, and nobody in the class was steadier in any session. The A was a lap clear of Dustin Vance, with a 16.023 that nobody else came within a second of. The average barely moved from his 24 June win, though, 17.434 here against 17.406 then, even with a best lap 0.432 quicker than June's. Winning by a lap is fine, and I still want that extra speed to show up over five minutes.

Exactly one second. That's how much quicker Dustin Vance's best lap was than in his June runner-up drive, 17.105 against 18.105, and it came at a price. His consistency fell from 94.05% that night to 86.42% here, the softest in the race, and the average slipped from 18.956 to 19.393. Second again, a lap down on Mark Beach, with the speed he lacked in June and without the steadiness he had. He needs both on the same night.

Nobody repeated himself all night like Chuck Burns: 89.90% in Q1, 89.97% in Q2, 89.02% in the A. The pace never came with it. His 20.410 main average was slower than both his qualifiers and 1.375 a lap off his 27 June main, even if the 17.490 in there was his best lap of the night. He was steadier than Dustin Vance in the A, 89.02% to 86.42%, and still a lap behind him, so the gap is pace.

The night in short

Three buggies finished in seed order, a lap apart each, and nobody laid a glove on the winner. Mark Beach banked the TQ on an 18-lap opener at 94.10%, the steadiest run of the night, and won with a 16.023 that left the other two more than a second adrift on lap time. Dustin Vance's night was the odd one: his best lap was exactly a second quicker than in his June runner-up drive, and his main was the softest in the race at 86.42%. Chuck Burns was his mirror image, three runs between 89.02% and 89.97% and an average that cost him a lap to Vance. Beach's one soft spot was a main at 91.01%, his scrappiest run of the night, and it still won by a lap.

Two laps. That's what Mark Beach put on the rest of this field, 18 against four 16s, and a five-car A-main doesn't get more one-sided than that. He TQ'd off the 18-lap second qualifier, then ran the main at 94.32% with the quickest lap of the night, a 16.455. The 17.406 average is what did the damage, because nobody else in the A got within a second and a half of it. He checked out, and I can't find a soft spot in any of his three runs.

Brian Zimmerman's best was more than a second quicker and he still crossed the line 1.282 seconds back on the same 16 laps. The main looked like his second qualifier instead: 16 laps and 85.78%, the lowest consistency in the A. He ran 16 laps in all three sessions and the main at 88.41% was steadier than either qualifier, but he still finished 6.007 seconds behind Brian Zimmerman. That consistency figure matched Chris Gross's to the hundredth, a funny thing to share with the car one place ahead. Staying on the same lap as the three cars in front of him is the part of the night worth keeping.

The night in short

Mark Beach made this one a procession: TQ, the quickest lap of the night at 16.455, and 18 laps in the main when all four cars behind him finished on 16 laps. The closest finish of the night was for second, and Dustin Vance took it with an 18.105, the slowest best lap of the five, because he ran 94.05% while Brian Zimmerman ran 85.78%. Zimmerman finished 1.282 seconds behind him on the same lap, which stings more for a driver who had turned a 16.466 in qualifying. Chris Gross had the second-quickest lap of the main and an average almost three seconds off it, and finished 6.007 seconds further back. Chuck Burns closed out the field 7.768 seconds behind Gross, with an identical 88.41% consistency.

Albert Bredernitz had TQ'd by 0.497 of a second on the same 16 laps and finished 9.467 seconds behind him, giving away 0.670 of a second a lap on average. Burns also owned the quickest lap of the night, a 17.350 in qualifying, and his 88.42% main was the scruffiest of the three, which bothers me not at all. After his 19 August main ended at 12 laps, Brian Zimmerman needed a finish, and he got one. Fifteen laps in 5:02.964 won it, with Chuck Burns recording no laps in the A. That's four Wednesdays running where his main has stopped short or recorded nothing, and nobody in this class is owed a clean five minutes more than he is.

The night in short

Two trucks entered and only one put a lap on the board in the main, so the win came down to running the distance, and Brian Zimmerman ran it, 15 laps in 5:02.964. Zimmerman's real driving came in the second qualifier: 16 laps at 92.98% with a 17.060 in it, the quickest lap of the night, enough to TQ after a first run that stopped at seven laps. The main itself was a lot slower (21.287 on average against 18.873 in that qualifier), and with the other truck's column empty it didn't need to be any quicker. Chuck Burns managed 13 laps in his first qualifier, one lap of 27.739 in his second and nothing in the A, and that's now four straight weeks without a full main for him. He still takes second in the class order, and the truck owes him one.

Albert Bredernitz was the one still running at 5:19.117, 16 laps at 93.67%, the steadiest run of the night in this class, and that was the win. Chuck Burns was classified third with no laps in the main, his second short night in a row. That's two truck wins for Bredernitz now, and in neither of them did he have the quickest race average.

Nobody in this class laid a glove on Dallas Boyd. Eighteen laps in both qualifiers made him TQ, with a 15.477 hot lap in the first that was nearly a second and a half clear of any other truck's best, and the main went his way by a full lap over Dustin Vance. If I'm picking at anything, it's the race average: 18.112 against the 17.189 he qualified on, the better part of a second a lap given back. He could afford it, because nobody else in the race averaged under 18.8.

Dustin Vance got quicker every time he went out, his average falling from 20.166 to 19.778 across the two qualifiers and then to 18.880 in the main. His 91.48% in the A was a shade steadier than the winner's 91.44%, which is a nice line to have and no use at all against a lap. The gap is in the fast laps: his best was a 16.963, and Dallas Boyd went under 16 in both qualifiers.

Chuck Burns ran the steadiest main of the three, 92.83%, at a 19.598 average that was more than a second and a half a lap quicker than either of his qualifiers. Then it stopped at 13 laps and 4:00.289, a minute short of everybody else. His first qualifier had stopped early too, at nine laps. Set that main against the 78.92% he ran in June, though, and this is real progress, cut short.

The night in short

Dallas Boyd checked out on this one. Eighteen laps in both qualifiers made Boyd TQ, his 15.477 in the first was the quickest lap of the night, and the main went his way by a lap. Dustin Vance got quicker in every session and even edged Boyd on consistency in the A, 91.48% to 91.44%, and finished a lap behind him all the same. Chuck Burns was steadier than both of them at 92.83% until his main stopped at 4:00.289 with a minute still to run. The one crack in Boyd's night was a race average 0.923 of a second slower than his best qualifying run, and nobody was close enough to make him pay for it.

Back in June, Albert Bredernitz's best lap in the main was a 19.883 and he finished sixth. Here he turned an 18.086, the quickest lap in this A, and won by 0.418 of a second. Russell Rima had the better average (20.349 to 20.451) and the steadier run, so the race was there for either of them, and Bredernitz is the one who came out on top. His qualifying had been eerily even, 15 laps twice with 0.354 of a second between the runs. That's a driver who has found a rhythm, and I'm buying it.

Nineteen laps in the first qualifier when nobody else in the class got past 15, behind a 14.781 that was more than three seconds quicker than anybody else's best lap all night. Noah Hicklin TQ'd by four laps. His second run ended at 4:39.823, short of the five minutes, and then the main recorded no laps for him at all, so the quickest truck in the class is classified third of three. Brutal. Those 19 laps are what I'll remember from this night, and they deserved a race.

The night in short

Noah Hicklin spent qualifying on another planet: 19 laps when nobody else found more than 15, and a 14.781 more than three seconds quicker than any other truck managed all night. Then the main went ahead with no laps recorded for him, which is the cruellest way there is to be the fastest truck in the class, and he's classified third. That left Albert Bredernitz and Russell Rima to settle it between them, and they settled it by 0.418 of a second on the same lap. Rima had the better average and the steadier run off a grid slot earned on five qualifying laps, while Bredernitz had the quickest lap in the main and the result. Back in June these two finished sixth and seventh, and a 0.418 finish between them is the best race this class has produced so far.

Seeded third behind two drivers who had found 16 laps in qualifying, Jagger Vance went out and drove the cleanest main of the night: 16 laps in 5:01.993 at 92.16%, with Henry Ballew 4.332 seconds back at the flag. His best lap in the race, a 17.516, was only the fifth-quickest in the A. That makes this a win built on clean laps rather than one big one, and I rate it higher for it. His second qualifier had been a scrappy 11 laps, so the turnaround inside one evening was magnificent.

The quickest lap anybody turned in qualifying was his, a 16.825, and Henry Ballew still lined up fourth, because both of his runs came in at 15 laps while two others found 16. The main put that right. Sixteen laps at 91.22%, well up on the 86.53% of his better qualifier, took him from fourth on the grid to second. If I'm him, though, the average stings: his 18.700 was a fraction quicker than Jagger Vance's 18.711, and he still finished 4.332 seconds behind.

Sam Bredernitz turned the quickest lap of the night in this class, a 16.638 in the main, and finished fourth, a lap down. How does that happen from second on the grid? An 86.27% main at a 20.291 average, half a second a lap slower than the 19.782 he'd qualified on. He had the speed and not the laps: his average sat more than three and a half seconds off his best. There was speed in Chuck Burns's truck: a 17.442 in the main, his quickest lap of the night and the fourth-quickest in the A. The laps around it were another matter. His 78.92% was the only main in the race under 80%, and the 22.375 average sat more than two seconds a lap off the 20.224 of his opening qualifier. For one qualifier, Albert Bredernitz was the tidiest driver in the class: 15 laps at 92.21%, and nobody ran a steadier heat. The pace never came. His best lap all night was an 18.568, a full second slower than any other driver's best, and his quickest in the A was a 19.883, more than two seconds off every other truck in the race. Off the pace is the honest verdict, and with consistency like his, pace is the only thing missing.

    A-main P7 · qualified P7 · qual best lap 17.518 · 90.59% qual cons · 13 laps · fast 17.582 · 90.42% cons

Something went wrong out there, because Russell Rima's main stopped at 13 laps and 4:28.872 while every other truck ran past five minutes. It's a shame, since what he did put together was good: 90.42% and a 20.330 average, quicker than both trucks that finished directly ahead of him and only 0.039 of a second a lap behind Sam Bredernitz. Seventh on the grid and seventh at the flag undersells that drive by a distance.

The night in short

Seven trucks, and the one with only the fifth-quickest best lap in the A won it. Jagger Vance came from third on the grid with 16 laps at 92.16%, the steadiest main of the night, and had 4.332 seconds on Henry Ballew at the flag. Ballew has a right to be sore about it, because the quickest lap in qualifying (16.825) and the best race average (18.700) were both his. Sam Bredernitz turned the quickest lap of the night, a 16.638 in the main, and still finished a lap down in fourth, while Brian Zimmerman's TQ, rescued from a six-lap first run, turned into third. Russell Rima's race stopped at 4:28.872, which is a pity, because his 20.330 average beat both Chuck Burns (fifth, through a 78.92% main) and Albert Bredernitz (sixth, tidy and slow).

Jax Bredernitz had his name down for both qualifiers and the A-main, and the night ended without a lap recorded against it in any of the three. He still keeps his place in the order. Novice is the class where an evening like this is allowed to happen, and nobody should read anything more into it than a rough night.

The night in short

Novice was a field of one on this Wednesday, sharing its track session with the 13.5 Stadium Trucks and scored apart from them. Jax Bredernitz was that one, entered for two qualifiers and the A-main, and no laps were recorded for him in any of the three. With a single car in the class nobody is credited with a win, and with no laps there's no pace to judge either. He is still classified, because a driver credited with no laps keeps his place in the order. In Novice a night with nothing on the board is part of learning the job, and I'm not marking him down for a single second of it.

Wednesday Offroad runs most weeks. Only nights that have been pulled from timing appear here.

How a night runs

Two qualifiers, then mains. Seeding is most laps, and on equal laps the quicker time — so 20/5:10 beats 20/5:25, and a single fast lap on its own moves nobody. Every figure in a qualifying row describes the one run a driver was seeded on rather than his best number from each.

A big class splits into an A and a B, and a bigger one into a C as well. The lower mains run first and the top two move up a main at a time — the C bumps into the B, the B bumps into the A — so a driver can race twice in a night. Each main is published as its own race, counted from first, and a driver who moved up appears in both of his: the one he won his way out of and the one he went on to run.
