   Beau Hall turned the quickest lap in the class in every round of the night, Q1, Q2, Q3 and the main, and the 15.112 in Q2 was the hot lap of the lot. Two 19-lap qualifiers made him TQ, and 19 more in the main at 91.02% won it by 1.777 over Kevin Moyer on the same lap. That's a clean sweep of the stopwatch with the result to match, and I can't find a hole in it. The only car that got close did it with nothing like his speed.

   How does the fourth-quickest lap in the main finish 1.777 behind the winner on the same lap? Kevin Moyer ran that main at 98.06%, and his 17.217 average was 0.033 a lap off Beau Hall's. Nobody else in the field got above 92% in the main. It was no one-off either: his Q1 was 98.34%, the steadiest run in the class all night. He started third and beat Dennis Keith, whose best lap was more than a second quicker, by a full lap. That's my drive of the night.

   Dennis Keith had the second-best speed in the class all night: 18 laps in all three qualifiers, and a Q3 lap of 15.457 only 0.014 off Beau Hall's in that round. The main is where it frayed. Consistency fell to 84.34% from 91% and better in qualifying, the average rose to 18.015, and Kevin Moyer, 1.136 slower on best lap, beat him by a full lap. The second seed should have been in the fight for this win, and that main never let him.

   Tim Wiechens got quicker every time he went out: 16.827 in Q1, then 16.172, 15.922, and a 15.702 in the main that only Hall and Keith beat. Everything around those quick laps was the problem. The main ran at 79.18% with a 19.072 average, more than three seconds a lap off his best, and 17 laps left him two down on the winner. I'd swap a couple of tenths of that best lap for ten points of consistency every time.

   Every run Steve Spears made had a lap more than the last: 13, 14 and 15 in qualifying, then 16 in the main, with his best lap falling from 19.205 to 16.952 along the way. That's a night that only went one direction, and he finished fifth from the sixth seed. The main's 83.42% was a step back from the 87.44% of his Q3, and I call that a small price for the extra lap.

   Zach Spears found his best lap of the night in the main, a 19.033, and the rest of that main came apart around it: 73.91%, a 25.008 average and 13 laps, one fewer than either of his last two qualifiers. Those qualifiers were tidy, 87.13% and 89.29%, so the clean laps are in there. The main was the scrappiest in the class, and it's the run to forget from a night that otherwise ran to form.

   A 20.762 in the main was the quickest lap Corey McQuinn turned all night, 1.331 better than anything from three qualifiers. The main stopped at 12 laps and 4:35.228, though, so the best stretch of his night ended early. He's a long way off the front on pace, no getting around that, but 86.67% says the laps he did run were clean ones.

   Henry Ballew qualified fifth off a Q1 of 16 laps at 93.97%, the steadiest qualifying run by anyone bar Kevin Moyer, and then the main went off with his grid slot empty. The qualifiers had been heading the wrong way, 16 laps, then 15, then 14, so the night was already fading. He's classified on his qualifying, behind all seven cars that took the start.

   Brian Zimmerman won this on laps, and I have no problem with that. Teagan Cummings had the quickest lap of the main, 15.484 to Zimmerman's 16.502, and finished a full lap behind him, 17 to 16, because Zimmerman held his race at 86.51% and Cummings came nowhere near it. Qualifying had split them by 1.222 seconds over 18 laps, so this was a two-car night until the main settled it. Seventeen days ago he needed the B and a bump to reach sixth. Here he beat the top seed by a lap.

   Teagan Cummings TQ'd on 18 laps, owned the quickest lap in the class all night at 15.301, and had the quickest lap of the main too. So how does he lose by a lap? A 53.79% main. His race average sat almost four seconds off his best lap of it, and a car that ran 18 laps in qualifying came home with 16. Consistency like that from the quickest car here is unacceptable, and I'm this hard on him only because the speed deserved a win.

   Steadiness I'll give Paul Andrade. His main ran at 88.59%, matching his second qualifier to the hundredth, which is about as repeatable as a driver gets. The gap to the front was wide, though: 13 laps to the winner's 17, and a best of 19.617, more than four seconds off Teagan Cummings's 15.484. Four seconds a lap is the job now.

   Four laps. That's what Mathew Schroeder won by, 18 laps to Henry Ballew's 14, and he threw down the quickest lap of the class all night in the main, a 14.902. His first qualifier was ugly, 15 laps at 80.15%, and he answered with 18 laps at 91.60% to TQ. Three days after finishing second to Shane Alberico, this time he's the one who checked out.

   The main was the weakest of Henry Ballew's three runs, and he still came away second. He did 16 laps in both qualifiers with a best of 16.646, then 14 laps in the main with nothing quicker than 18.123. The place owes more to William Schroeder's empty main than to anything Ballew did in his own. He found a 15.783 in the 24 June B-main, so the pace exists, and I wanted to see it here.

   After the first qualifier William Schroeder had the better of Mathew Schroeder, 17 laps to 15 and a quicker best lap, 15.749 to 15.915. Then nothing: no laps in the second qualifier and none in the main. The second seed ending up third of three is a rough way to spend a Saturday, and that opening run deserved better company.

   Seventeen laps, then 18, then 19 for the TQ, then 20 in the main: Tim Wiechens got better every time he went out, and his average fell with every run too, from 17.823 in the first qualifier to 16.141 in the A. The 14.804 he threw down in the main was the hot lap of the night. Josh Strumillo's best average all evening was 17.166, a full second a lap slower, which is how a three-car main ends with the winner a lap clear. I'd have liked a fight, but nobody else had the average to start one.

   A blank opening qualifier, and Josh Strumillo still put together the steadiest run anybody in the class managed all night, 92.44% in Q3. The main was quicker and scruffier, 19 laps at 85.48% behind a 15.059 that was six tenths better than anything he found in qualifying. He ran 17 laps in the 27 June main, so two more here is real progress, even if Tim Wiechens was another lap up the road.

   Nobody in qualifying went quicker than the 14.869 Charlie Hicklin turned in Q3, and only the winner's hot lap in the main beat it all night. So how does that car finish last of three? His main stopped after two laps and 52.087, which says something went badly wrong early. It hurts more because the pace was up: his best lap on the 27 June night, when he seeded first, was a 15.170. A car that quick deserved five minutes of racing and got less than one.

   Twenty laps at 97.36% is a preposterous qualifier, and Dennis Keith's Q2 carried the night's hot lap as well, a 14.976. Nobody else reached 20 laps in qualifying. The main was more ordinary, 19 laps at 90.58%, and Teagan Cummings even turned a quicker lap in it (15.054 to his 15.129), yet Keith still won by a lap. That makes it back-to-back Saturday wins, and this time he did it from TQ.

   Nobody in the main turned a quicker lap than Teagan Cummings, a 15.054, and nobody else in the class qualified above 92% in both runs (93.38% and 92.45%, 19 laps each). So how does that end a lap down? The main stopped counting at 18 laps and 4:57.504, the only finishing time in the class under five minutes, and the 88.71% before that was the least tidy run of Cummings's night. Going by the quickest laps in that main, this should have been a race for the win.

   An 18-lap Q2 at 95.00% was the second-tidiest qualifier in the class, behind only Keith's, and I wanted Chris Gross to carry it into the main. He didn't: 16 laps and a 19.366 average, over two seconds a lap slower than that Q2. It still made the podium for the second Saturday running, with Brian Zimmerman a lap further back, so I'll grumble and give him the credit.

   Brian Zimmerman ran two 17-lap qualifiers, near enough identical at 87.61% and 87.40%, for the fourth seed. At least this main went the distance, which his 12-lap stoppage of 24 June did not, but 15 laps at 81.82% was a step down from either qualifier and left him a lap behind Gross. He finished where he started, and the main gave back the consistency his qualifying had shown.

   Paul Andrade

   Paul Andrade got 11 laps out of the whole of qualifying, all of them in Q1, since Q2 recorded nothing. The main was his best run by a distance: 13 laps over the full five minutes and an 18.101 best lap, 1.689 quicker than anything he turned in Q1. The 24.247 average is a long way off the front, but every number moved the right way in the run that mattered most.

   Three days after a main that credited him with no laps, Dennis Keith won this one by a lap. He didn't have the TQ (Charlie Hicklin's 19-lap Q2 beat both of his 18s), so he took it in the main: 19 laps in 5:10.980 with the night's hot lap, a 15.002. The 16.372 average was close to a second a lap better than Hicklin's, and that's a margin no TQ is talking his way around.

   Charlie Hicklin was the only driver to find 19 laps in qualifying, and that Q2 at 94.01% was the cleanest run in the class all night, so the TQ was his on merit. The main was still the tidiest in the field at 89.77%, but the average slid to 17.306 and Keith won by a lap. What stings is that his Q2 average of 16.211 beats Keith's winning 16.372. He had the winning run in him and spent it in qualifying.

   Last on the grid after a Q2 that stopped at 11 laps, Chris Gross turned the main into his best run of the night: 17 laps at 89.64%, a hair off the cleanest main in the field, with his quickest lap (15.805) in it as well. That beat Josh Strumillo to the line by 1.506 on the same lap and put the fifth seed on the podium. On Wednesday his main lasted one lap. I call that a response.

   Qualifying went to plan for Josh Strumillo, 17 laps in Q2 and a 15.870 for the third seed, and the main came in almost identical: 17 laps, a 15.902 best. The problem is that Chris Gross started two places behind him and finished 1.506 ahead on the same lap. Their averages were 0.045 a lap apart, and Strumillo's 85.98% was the scrappier main of the two. Third seed to fourth is a place given away, and it went to the man starting last.

   A blank first qualifier left Victor Burger one run to earn a grid slot, and 17 laps in Q2 got him fourth. The main couldn't hold it. Sixteen laps at 85.20% left him a lap behind Gross and Strumillo, even though his 18.571 average was only 0.079 a lap slower than Strumillo's. Under a tenth a lap on average and a whole lap at the flag: that gap is his night in one line.

   Two weeks after losing an A by 0.530, Robert Summers left nobody anything to argue about. Third on the grid off two 17-lap qualifiers, he ran 18 laps in 5:14.990 at 96.14%, the steadiest run in the class all night and the only one to reach 18 laps. The 16.577 in there was the night's best lap, and the 17.445 average took 0.832 a lap off his best heat. That's a buggy on rails, and a lap clear of Victor Burger is what it got him.

   Nothing recorded a fortnight ago, and second place this time. Victor Burger's 17-lap Q1 at 93.70% put him on the front row, and his 16.744 in the main was a lap only Robert Summers beat all night. He finished a lap down on Summers and 3.289 clear of Brian Zimmerman, the TQ, on the same 17 laps, so the one driver who out-qualified him ended up behind him. That is a proper comeback.

   Brian Zimmerman's Q2 was a beauty: 17 laps in 5:04.627 at 95.83%, and nobody ran a steadier qualifier, so the TQ was his. The A was 17 laps again but 5:24.601 of them, nearly 20 seconds slower over the same distance, at 87.25% and a 19.042 average. That's the second club night this summer the qualifying version of him went missing in the main, after a 93.06% opener and an 85.78% A back in June. Twice is a pattern, and I want to see him break it.

   Behind only the winner, nobody ran a steadier main than Simon Andrade's 92.63%, and it took 10.931 seconds off his best qualifier over the same 15 laps. His 17.845 best lap was the quickest of his three runs as well. Chris Gross had a quicker lap than that and finished 3.452 behind him on the same distance, so the steadiness was worth a place. Fourth seed, fourth place, and a main better than anything he did in qualifying.

   Chris Gross turned a 17.423 in the main, 0.422 quicker than Simon Andrade's best, and finished 3.452 behind him on the same 15 laps. An 85.74% race with a 20.665 average is how that happens. His last Saturday out ended in third on a 92.88% main, so the tidy version of him exists, and this wasn't it. He did take 7.567 seconds off his best qualifier, which keeps it from being a wasted five minutes.

   Every time Sawyer Andrade went out, his best lap came down: 30.255 in Q1, 26.241 in Q2, 26.193 in the main. That's the number I want moving first, and it moved. The A was the scrappiest of his three runs at 74.84%, so Q2, nine laps at 86.41%, stays the best run of his night. Getting that Q2 into a main is the next job.

   Half a second is all Josh Strumillo had at the flag, 0.530 over Robert Summers on the same 17 laps, and he won it with the scrappier main of the two: 89.84% consistency to Summers' 92.74%, and an 18.145 average to 17.863. The TQ came off the opening qualifier, 17 laps in 5:07.533 at 92.73%, and his 16.401 in Q2 was the best lap anybody turned in qualifying. Holding off a car that beat him on every other figure in the main takes some doing, and I'm not knocking a thousandth of it.

   Robert Summers turned a 16.300 in this main, the best lap anybody in the class managed all night, ran it at 92.74% and still lost by 0.530. That one hurts. Qualifying had him a step behind Josh Strumillo, second seed off a 17-lap Q2 in 5:09.801, and the main turned that around on everything but the order at the finish, his 17.863 average included. Half a second is a miserable margin to lose by, and I'd be sore about this one for a week.

   Four laps. That was the whole of Chris Gross's qualifying, a blank Q1 and a Q2 that stopped after 4 laps and 1:26.010, so something went wrong before the main ever started. Then he drove the steadiest A in the class, 16 laps at 92.88% with a 16.696 best, and took third off Chuck Burns, who had been seeded a place ahead of him. Next to his 24 June main, 88.41% and a 19.408 average, this was better on both counts by a distance. I love the main, and I'd love it more with a qualifier attached.

   Losing a place to a driver with four laps of qualifying behind him is a hard one to swallow, and Chuck Burns finished 5.049 behind Chris Gross on the same 16 laps. His own main was better than his 24 June one, a 19.035 average against 19.640, at 89.91%. So he drove better than he had three days earlier and still went backwards from the third seed. Gross ran 92.88% and Burns didn't, and that was the gap.

   Every run beat the one before it, and in Novice that's the whole job. Cutler Eckhoff went 10 laps, then 10 again nearly 25 seconds quicker, then 11 in the A-main, and his best lap fell from 30.370 to 23.647 to a 21.978 that was the quickest Novice lap of the night. He had the class to himself, so there's no win to hand out, but taking more than eight seconds off his best lap in one evening is a prize of its own.
